enemystorOne day last week  I realized that a particular song kept playing in my mind, over and over and over again. I was actually having a great day so I wondered why in the world was I was singing that particular song.

Later in the day I realized that one of my best friends was experiencing a “storm”  in her life. I therefore began to reflect about the days 3 years ago when my storms were really turbulent.  The days when I would listen and sing to “Ride Out Your Storm”every morning as it played overcomeon Gospel JA FM Radio. Those days I learnt the power of praise during stormy times.  I also acknowledged that life too has seasons and as the seasons change so does the cycle starts again.  I also learnt practically that once I am alive I will experience turbulence and choppy seas but I do not have to sail or fight the story weather alone because of what Jesus said in John 6:33

Storm Defined

It was during that stormy time in my life that I really acknowledged the hand of Jesus at work in my life. jestorBefore the storms came there was a lot of uncertainty. I could see the weather changing and I wondered If I should seek shelter within the usual familiar environment or if I should relocate. Just as the animals who’s sixth sense usually picks up when a storm is coming and becomes restless so was I.  I was also quite untrusting, hoping to see the skies turn to the usual clear blue which indicates an appearance of calm and not a colour that would indicate that a storm is on the horizon. I wanted normalcy not uncertainty.

I was also fearful, afraid to step out during those storms. Each time I tried the weather became quite turbulent and I felt frustrated. There were even times I felt depressed or experienced rejection. Those days I did not know who I was in Christ. I had lost my way and forgot about the promises that were made to me by my father. I needed help, a really good captain  .

Sometimes I tried to calm the storms by myself forgetting that “ I could do all things ONLY through Christ who strengthens me” if it is his will.  Those days I was also quite ignorant about the “wiles of the Devil”.  I did not believe in spiritual warfare because of ignorance.  Controversial topics  such as Gifts of the Spirit and Spiritual Warfare were seen by many in our Christian circles as either superstitious or a topic to be avoided therefore they were not taught in most non-charismatic churches which in fact made the congregants powerless.

Little did I know I could ask God a question and receive a direct answer. If I had a Spirit of Discernment or really knew the voice of God, I would have known to trust and obey the little voice that spoke from the HEART, not one that came from my HEAD! (Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between the voice of the inner man and thoughts from the mind especially when there are a lot of distractions).

I realised that although I had a map for the journey, access to crewmen, a two-way radio and a compass at my disposal my boat kept sailing in circles.  I had no control over the weather elements, only the things I had access to.

I spoke to God through prayer. I asked for guidance on the journey and for him to calm the “Sea of Life” when they got rough.  There were times when the squalls were frightening or manageable, however, when the hurricanes came I had great difficulty as I tried to navigate my way through that element using the same methods as those used in the minor storms.

I prepared and tried to sail through the hurricane  without clear directions from experienced Captain.  I did not pull down my sail or use an anchor to dock the ship at a port until it was safe to sail again. I did not use my “Walkie-Talkie” my two-way radio effectively to not only keep in touch with the “Coast Guard” but to receive feedback on the route to take to the destination as usually there are several routes to take you to a destination, maps are also updated from time to time as well as the fact that there are some things that are not learnt from a book or during sailor training.

Some knowledge is only available through experience. Not all hurricanes are the same there are categories. Although they are all classified as a natural phenomenon they are not the same. Without knowledge of the wind speed or category and what other forces may be affecting the system it would be foolish to set sail without having all necessary information.  For those of you who have experienced Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 which was a Category 3 hurricane , can you imagine preparing for a Hurricane Maria a Category 5 hurricane in the same manner as you would for a regular tropical depression or even as you did for Hurricane Gilbert?

Below is a chart showing different wind speed for storms

I knew that a captain was available but he seemed asleep.   I spoke to him about so many things mostly routine general stuff but as usual the conversation imagesLQ44GDEIwas one way. I did not stop to ask the Captain his opinion on the routes I should take to get to the destination or if I was using an accurate map, if I needed a crew with me for the journey, the supplies I needed, if my ship was up to standard nor what to expect on the voyage.   I spoke he listened I did not  ensured I received a response from the Captain I just went ahead on my own hoping the ship would dock at the correct port without consideration of safety for myself or my crew.

One day I cried out. I let go like when Jesus was walking  on the water and said to Peter “come”.  After calling out to my friend he held my hand and said “Peace Be Still!” He calmed the waters and the winds resided.

Lesson Learnt

  • In stormy times get a competent captain for your ship/boat.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help
  • As Jesus did throughout his life there will always be test and trials in life.
  • When troubles come don’t despair. Jesus came and overcame all struggles he can help in times of crisis.
  • Christ’s sacrifice gave us power to also say “Peace Be Still” because he lives within us. “greater is he who is within me”!
  • I am not alone.

Christ has the Victors Crown! He has the keys to us having life and because of that we have overcome through him.

Be Blessed

Mark 4:35-41New King James Version (NKJV)

Wind and Wave Obey Jesus

35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”[a] 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Ride Out Your Storm

You’ve been in this storm….It seems like forever..
And your night of Confusion..Has been OH so long…
Your Ship has lost anchor…And the storms got your drifting..
Just Hold on to Jesus..And Ride out your storm..

Ride out your storm…GOd’s right there with you..
Oh you may not feel him…But you’re not alone…
You’re hurting now…But your morning is coming..
Just hold on to Jesus…And ride out your storm….

Remember his promises..He said I’ll never forsake
Though the waters are troubled…They’ll do you no harm..
Don’t give up the battle …For your answer is coming…
Just hold on to Jesus ..And Ride out your storm…

Will Your Anchor Hold?
